Master's program
The curriculum of the Applied Physics Master's program has been redesigned as of the academic year 2020-2021. The Program and Examination Regulations describe the transitional arrangements with regard to the earlier curriculum.
The Applied Physics Master’s program is a two-year program. Each year is worth 60 credits, with each credit equivalent to 28 hours of study.
The Master’s program includes 120 credits and consists of the following components:
- Mandatory core courses:
- General core course (Mandatory for all Applied Physics Master students) – 5 credits
- Track core course (Mandatory for all student within a Track) – 5 credits
- Track Electives – 15 credits (or 10 credits when student chooses the track Fluids, Bio and Soft Matter)
- Free elective space – 20 till 35 credits (depending on the credits for the external internship and graduation project)
- External internship – 15 or 30 credits
- Graduation project – 45 or 60 credits
You must make a choice from one of the options below with regard to the layout of the master's program:
- An external internship of 15 credits in combination with a graduation project of 45 credits and a free elective space of 35 credits
- An external internship of 15 credits in combination with a graduation project of 60 credits and a free elective space of 20 credits
- An external internship of 30 credits in combination with a graduation project of 45 credits and a free elective space of 20 credits.

Defining your program
At the start of the program you choose one of the three tracks, defining the specialization in your program. The 3 tracks within the Applied Physics Master's program have been refined to (1) Nano, Quantum and Photonics (2) Plasmas and Beams and (3), Fluids, Bio and Soft Matter as of September 2020.
You further specify your desired program by making choices regarding your free electives, external internship and graduation project.
Under certain conditions, an acknowledgement that the student has completed a study program with a strong emphasis on theory for technology can be included in the diploma supplement of the Master’s Degree Program in Applied Physics. A detailed specification of the requirements for obtaining the “Theory for Technology” acknowledgement is described in the Program and Examination Regulations.
Approval of your study program
You should list your desired study program on the AP Study Program Form, discuss it with your mentor, and submit the fully completed form to the Study Program Committee via Osiris Zaak, no later than six months after the start of your Master’s program. Also send a copy (Cc) of your AP Study Program Form to your mentor.
Double diploma programs
If you want to submit a request for an internal double diploma please follow the procedure as described on this page. Do not submit requests for an internal double diploma via Osiris Zaak.
